Transnet is offering a Train Assistant Trainee Programme aimed at equipping individuals with the skills and practical experience needed to support train operations safely and efficiently.

Successful candidates will assist the Train Driver in the safe handling of different types of trains and locomotive consists, including:

• Airbrake

• Vacuum
• High speed
• Heavy haul
• Passenger trains

The goal is to ensure freight and cargo reach destinations safely, on time, and without damage.

Key Responsibilities

Locomotive Preparation

• Sign on duty at designated workplace
• Determine which locomotive must be prepared
• Obtain and place equipment on locomotive
• Check and supplement prescribed equipment
• Clean working area
• Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
• Conduct locomotive brake tests
• Couple locomotive
• Despatch locomotive

Communication Equipment

• Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies, and telemeters
• Check functionality of communication equipment

Pre-Trip Preparation

• Attach/detach vehicles according to works order
• Mount telemeters where necessary
• Complete vehicle list and vacuum forms
• Mount train indicators
• Examine train
• Perform brake tests with Train Driver

Shunting and Operations

• Perform shunting activities as per directives
• Place and remove trucks at sidings
• Update vehicle lists
• Assist Train Driver during the journey
• Compare signal positions verbally
• Reset locomotive trip-outs
• Protect train during incidents
• Assist during emergencies

Administration Duties

• Complete Train Journal after every shift
• Submit documentation to Section Manager
• Ensure accurate salary processing

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics or Physical Science
• Minimum age of 21 years
• Minimum height of 1.6 metres
• Physically fit (hearing, vision, mental and physical fitness will be tested)
• Psychomotor ability (assessed through Vienna Testing System – VTS standards)
• Ability to carry heavy objects
• Willingness to undergo medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments
• Willingness to complete theoretical and practical training successfully
• Must obtain Train Assistant certification to work independently

• Candidates must successfully complete theoretical and practical assessments.
• Regular medical and behavioural assessments will be conducted every 12 months.
